Viponds’concrete paints work well with old and new concrete
Whether you have a freshly poured concrete surface or an older one, Viponds' concrete paints can be used as long as correct surface preparation and paint application techniques are followed.
We recommend using Acrylic Concrete Prep over new concrete and on old concrete when using Ecopave. It's worth noting that concrete prep is not a finishing coat and should always be covered with a proper top coat.
New concrete will accept paint and will have no long-term adhesion problems if:
- The concrete is 25 Mpa or above
- The concrete is cured completely
- The surface is acid etched and free of efflorescence and surface dust
- A steel trowelled surface is acid etched and mechanically roughened
- The concrete surface is in good condition and does not crumble or dust when brushed before or during application
Old concrete is completely cured concrete. To break the surface and allow the paint to fully penetrate the bond, old concrete must be mechanically sanded and acid etched.

Frequently Asked Questions
Concrete paving paint can help enhance the appearance of concrete surfaces, add slip resistance and protect the concrete from damage due to weather and traffic. A fresh coat of paint can also be a cost-effective alternative to replacing a worn-out concrete surface.
To successfully apply concrete paint, the surface must be in good condition. Any signs of cracked, chipped or damaged concrete must be addressed prior to the application. This will ensure that the paint adheres properly, resulting in a smooth and flawless finish. Neglecting to prepare the surface can lead to an uneven appearance and cause flaking or peeling over time.
Viponds’ concrete paving paints are ideal for both interior and exterior use. They can be used on driveways, garage floors, paths, verandahs and more.
We recommend applying at least two coats of concrete paint. If the surface is frequently exposed to heavy traffic, a third coat can increase durability.
For better paint penetration and adhesion, we recommend applying mineral turpentine. For sealed concrete surfaces, thin the first coat with 10% mineral turpentine, while for unsealed surfaces, thin the first coat with 40% mineral turpentine. The second coat and third coats should only be thinned to facilitate application.
Concrete paint is available in an endless range of colours and tonal hues. Viponds’ extensive colour range includes neutrals, pastels, bold tones, Pantone colours, factory milled colours, RAL colours and Australian standard colours. With so many options available, you can customise the look of your concrete surface to suit your unique style and surroundings.
The main difference lies in how these products react to concrete surfaces.
Acid-based concrete stains penetrate the porous concrete and react with the minerals and inorganic metal salts present in the surface. The chemical reaction creates a rich translucent colour change. However, the final result may vary depending on the surface and the concrete's chemical composition.
On the other hand, concrete paint is non-reactive and fills the surface pores of the concrete to produce a protective barrier and a consistent colour.
Concrete paint is easier to apply and provides excellent coverage. Concrete paving paint can conceal minor flaws in the concrete surface. Unlike acid-based stains, which require a sprayer for application, most concrete paints can be applied using a standard paint brush or roller.
