Viponds metal primer undercoat improves the adhesion of finishing paint, providing a strong, smooth base. Unlike regular paint, our primers and undercoats are not meant for the final surface layer; they’re formulated to enhance filling and binding with the material underneath, leading to a more durable finish.
It’s primarily used on treated metals such as galvanised steel and Zincalume, but it's also effective on regular steel. Our metal primer undercoat is ideal for a range of settings, including both indoor and outdoor environments.
First, thoroughly stir the undercoat metal primer. Then, using a brush, roller or spray gun, apply a thin, even layer to the surface. Take your time to ensure uniform coverage and optimal adhesion.
Ensure the metal surface is thoroughly cleaned and free from dirt, grease, oil and rust. Any existing rust should be treated with a rust converter. For galvanised surfaces, clean them using mineral turpentine or a solvent degreaser, and then wipe down with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
Our metal primer undercoat typically dries to the touch within 30 minutes under normal conditions (15°C and low humidity). It's typically ready for a second coat after two hours. Avoid applying the primer if the air or surface temperature falls below 10°C.
We recommend using Viponds Hot Weather Thinner. This product slows the drying process of water-based paints by reducing the evaporation rate of water from the paint film. It also enhances the paint's flow and extends the wet edge, improving the overall quality of application.
